I’ve got a little riddle for you guys. What do Top Gun, Oceans Eleven, Borat, and 10 Things I Hate about You have in common? Well besides them all being movies, they all feature songs written by a man named Tom Whitlock and I just me him!
In case you didn’t know, Whitlock is a Drury alumni, and although the travel time involved with his musical career kept him from receiving enough credits to graduate, He was given an honorary doctorate in music in 1999. I guess that’s what happens when you win and Oscar and a Golden Globe for a song you wrote in thirty minutes.
Yea, that’s right, Whitlock wrote “Take My Breath Away” for Top Gun during a thirty minute car ride. And although I for one think “Danger Zone” is a much better song, “Take My Breath Away” is Whitlock’s most popular song.
Among this incredible accomplishment, Whitlock talked to me and a large group of students about some of the other collaborations he’s worked on with people including Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, and Madonna. He also went into great detail about what it takes to make it in the music business. In short, he believes that being successful involves a lot of hard work, a lot of patience, and a lot of luck. Finally he believes that assessing you’re own talent is the first step every musician or songwriter needs to take, and that the education he received at Drury helped him to take his talents to the next level.
Being humble, talented, and highly successful, Tom Whitlock is a prime example of what can be accomplished in life when you combine an incredible work ethic with a Drury University education! Photo Credit: Newsleader.com
