Major Pains: Why I’ve Decided to Switch Majors (and add a minor)

November 16, 2012 in Dallas' Posts

Now that’s a long title.  So after an eternity it seems, my first semester of college is just about done and things are starting to slow down. And while during the past few months I’ve had some of the best times of my life, there are some things that I want to change. My major is one of them.

“But Dallas, why are you changing your major? Doesn’t Drury have one of the most sophisticated communication departments in this part of the country?”

Yea, yea they do. In fact you wouldn’t believe the amount of information I’ve learned about communications in the past semester, and that’s just from the entry level courses.

This being said, if any of you had boyfriends or girlfriends in high school, you’ll know what I mean when I say people’s interest change. And that’s fine, especially at Drury since students aren’t required to officially declare a major until their junior year. So what am I’m making the switch to?

I’ve decided to change my major from communications to business marketing ,which I’ll admit, isn’t really all that big of a shift. The major difference is that I’ll be working to get accepted into the Breech School of Business Administration, so I’ll be taking some extra math classes. Now usually I hate math, but they’ll be classes in practical stuff like accounting and statistics, you know, the useful stuff. Now I don’t know about you,  but I’m all for math  if the solution I come up with makes me  money (cue evil maniacal laugh).

Secondly I’ve decided to minor in law and society in addition to my entrepreneurship minor. The main reason why I’m adding this minor is because of my philosophy class I took this semester. It never quite registered to me the influence of philosophy in modern society until recently. For instance, you know America’s political system? Checks and balances? Equal rights for all men and women? Government funded education? Yea that was all copied from a guy named John Locke. Anyways, just another one of my interests.

With my new major and minor I can really start working on accomplishing my dreams. One of which is to become a super businessman like Jay Z or Richard Branson. But in the meantime I’ll just enjoy my time here at Drury. Something tells me it’s going to be a good second semester!
