Student Government Time!

September 20, 2012 in Diversity, Student Government Association

Hello readers!

Although there are many clubs at Drury, none is more important than the Student Government Association. The organization is composed of elected Senators, Vice Presidents and an overall President.

Student Government Logo

It is divided among 5 committees:

  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Student Affairs
  • Academic Affairs
  • Communications
  • Finance

Each committee is led by a Vice President and composed of Senators that work toward the goals of each committee and within the guidelines established by SGA. This is my second year on SGA, Freshmen year I was a senator on the Diversity Committee and when I became a Sophomore I ran for VP and won, this is the position I have now; Vice President of Diversity.

Although each committee works on their own things Finance has major responsibilities because they assign money to clubs so that they can operate. At the beginning of each semester clubs work on their budgets and hand them in to the Finance Committee so they can make sure it goes along with our budgetary guidelines, if they receive the good view then the entire SGA votes to either approve or deny their request.

My committee (Diversity) has worked on several projects throughout the years, such as “Chair-In” where students used wheelchairs to raise awareness about disability. Overall we are very dedicated towards our cause and let me tell you that this has been one of the most valuable experiences I’ve ever had. We are the face of this campus and we work towards the interests of the student body which is not easy at times, but it definitely pays of when you see your hard work.

We meet every Thursday at 8:15 and then every Tuesday the Executive Council composed of the VP’s and President get together to plan the weekly work. We have a lot of fun and you get to meet some of the most prominent leaders on campus by being part of this group.

Let me know if you have any questions about this awesome organization!

Bid Day at Drury!

September 18, 2012 in Diversity, Greek Life, The Drury Connection

Hello everyone!

Drury is a great school for a lot of different reasons, most of which I have attempted to explain on this blog, but one particular one is its option of going “Greek” or joining a fraternity or sorority. The Sororities had their Bid Day a couple of weeks back, but fraternieites had theirs this past Sunday and it was an awesome day! Since I went through the process I thought I would share with you guys interested in joining a fraternity or those who wan’t to learn more about it what its all about. But first an awesome picture!

All the new Fraternity members and the old ones

In the picture you can see the 4 DU fraternities: Kappa Alpha, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Nu and Sigma Pi with their recently nominated new members! The past week everyone interested in Greek Life went through a process called “Rush” where we could interact with the different chapters and get to know some of the guys in each one. Every house planned events, for example Sigma Pi went to the Springfield Brewing Company one day and Lambda Chi had a video games, pizza and broomball day just to name a few. Each day we had the opportunity to go to the event we liked the most; I will just mention that I happened to win a $25 Dollars WalMart gift card for winning a Casino Night (With Monopoly money so don’t get to excited!), and then at the end of the week we “prefed” the top two houses we liked the most.

After the fraternities talked about all the new students on Sunday they extended invitations to some of the ones that showed interest, it was then up for us to decide if we accepted the invitation (or Bid). I gladly accepted my invitation and I am now an Associate Member of Lambda Chi Alpha!

Rush was an incredibly fun event (and hey free food) that really helped me get to know a lot of people I might have seen around Drury, but never really talked to and meet some of the Freshmen. I’m working on getting an interview with some current active members of each fraternity so you all can get an inside glance into this world and decide whether it sounds like something you would want to do!

Here is a picture of all the new members of Lambda Chi!

A Political Dream Come True

September 13, 2012 in Politics, Social Networking, The Drury Connection

Hello!

Today has been perhaps the most exciting day in my political science career since I started here at Drury 2 years ago. No I did not get to wear an Obama mask (:(), but I got to meet a reporter for one my favorite political news agencies, POLITICO! In the words of Dave Catanese himself, POLITICO is for those politics junkies that abuse the Pull to Reload action on Twitter just to see whats news, and I have been following it for some years now, so when I heard that one of its reporters was going to come on campus I could not resist!

Following the Convocation Theme for this year to bring speakers to campus that are relevant within the world of social media, Convo Director Dr. Groves, asked Dave Catanese who has worked in Springfield in the past to address the students. Regardless of his political ideology, Catanese is a VIP of the journalist world! Convocation started at 11am and I was glued to my seat and to my twitter account since questions to Catanese would be taken through the social network. After convo I was invited to a Lunch with him and some people from the Political Science department, this is when the real fun started! It is at times like this when I value coming to Drury, where else would you get invited to something like this? A lunch with an actual POLITICO writer? This is stuff dreams are made of, granted only for us political junkies, but still a dream :) .

For starters the food was absolutely delicious (I applaud the Commons for shining today!), but then when the conversation began I forgot about the meal in front of me. The debate took us all around the US discussing Senate and House elections, not to mention the contested race for the White House! Catanese was a gold mine of information and opinions that was so valuable I couldn’t actually believe I was part of it. Senate races in Virginia, demographics in Texas, swing voters in Wisconsin and many other issues were brought up by Political Science teachers, students and Catanese; as you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed this lunch. The only reason I abandoned the room was because they had to pick up the buffet!

Later that day a meet and greet had been scheduled between DU Bloggers and Catanese so that we could be exposed to his experience within the blogging industry. Not only was this a great chance for us to improve our blogs and blogging styles, but also learn a bit on how we could thrive in an industry like journalism. I must say that I really liked being able to sit down and talk with someone like Catanese, who even though has a long resume, still treats others, and specially students like they are valued. We learned of his taste in music (Rihanna, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z top his playlists), observed his usage of both a BlackBerry (wait, they still make those?) and an iPhone, and last but not least understand how a POLITICO reporter can actually lead a personal life parallel to his job. Let me tell you, even if you are not interested in politics, bringing someone like him to Drury is exactly what makes us the great school we are. The Drury Connection is vital, and hey you know what? It could even lead you to your first job!

Mr. Catanese if you happen to read this blog I want to thank you for giving us your time, experience and insight on the wonderfully complex world of politics! It truly made a difference to hear from a pro in the industry!

Remember the Drury Connection!

Labor Day at the Lake! (International style!)

September 9, 2012 in International Student Life Office, Labor Day, Weekend Fun

Happy Sunday everyone!

As soon as you say long weekend expect international students to plan something wacky, fun and unexpected. Labor Day is always a fun weekend, which is easily understood because we have no classes on Monday which is the worst day of the week…, but yeah going back to Labor Day. Although it has a very long and equally important history we translate this into a day of fun! International Student Life (which overlooks international students) planned a trip to the Lake for us, a first for the vast majority. Needless to say we all got a chance to show of our awesome six packs eating delicious burgers and hot dogs lake side. Enjoy some of the moments in the pictures below!

The Do’s and Dont’s of Freshmen Year

September 5, 2012 in Balance, First Year Experience, Goals, Meeting New People, Orientation, Sports

Hello there freshmen!

It is nearly 3 weeks since we started school and those Golden Days of Orientation where nothing except having fun and meeting people seemed to matter. However I hate to burst your little bubble, but it is time to get serious (in a college way, which know that I think of it is not serious at all but whatever). Freshmen Year can be the best year of your life if you want it to be! Follow my well tested guide and I am sure you will not only avoid the Freshmen 15, but be a rockstar (if you can’t sing sorry…)!

  1. BE ACTIVE! I say this in several different ways. Firstly be involved, whether it is with your dorm activities, or joining clubs, or greek life do it! Freshmen year is like adding baking soda to a cake, if you don’t do it early then your bake will be ruined. In case that you didn’t get my culinary metaphor, what I meant to say is that Freshman year will be in a way a reflection of future years at Drury. If you make good friends, take the right classes and join the best organizations for you then success is almost certain! I also mean Be Active in sports or physical activity! Now I am perhaps not the best one to be dictating gym policy since I have missed my last several appointments, but nevertheless I can tell you know that find time to at least one or two hours of physical activity per day and you will be awesome!
  2. BE TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU COME FROM! We all know that making friends can be somewhat of an akward experience, but if you remain close to how you were brought up and the values that were taught then people will want to be around you. Don’t judge to harshly, forgive easily and be friendly and people will flock to you like ants flock to candy. Secondly do not forget your place of origin, whether it’s St. Louis or Tokyo it is always good to keep a part of your culture close to your heart.Express this culture and explain it to others, specially those who are foreign to it.
  3. STUDY STUDY STUDY! Now although College is a pretty fun time, the number 1 reason we are here is to study and get good grades in order to make sure we get a good job after graduation. I personally believe it goes beyond that, we don’t do this just because we want to get more money, but because this is a test of our effort and hard work! Classes can feel somewhat overwhelming, but believe me if you apply yourself to the books and contribute during class, it will all be worth it later down the road. Make sure you visit Olin Library for a comfortable working environment if you can’t seem to focus in your dorm, or even get together with friends if you are more the social type. My message is, work hard and keep up the effort!

Hopefully you saw the logic in my suggestions, but if you have anything else you want to add feel free to comment!

See you soon!

Juan

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

August 26, 2012 in Meeting New People

Between a summer of YOLO-ing life and missing my friends (whatevs) I finally made my way back to Drury after 3 months abroad. Regardless of any protests against it, I will eventually bore you with the intimate details of my joyful summer, but for the time being I will introduce my blog, myself and my incredible university which I have been happy to call my home away from home for the last 2 years. If you don’t know me, I encourage you to read below, if you do go ahead and still read ’cause I am awesome and you probably want to learn more about me.

As you might know from the colorful banners above this post, my name is Juan Miguel Franco, however you can call me Juan (Some even call me Pancho for some weird and inexplicable reason… #duprobz). I am a Junior (jiji still a kid inside though :p) majoring in International Political Studies and Journalism, which is somewhat of a mouthful, but in reality it just means I argue a bit more than I should and I am quite public about it (hence the Journalism part duhhh). As you can  tell by the last couple of sentences I abuse adjectives in a way that would make Merriam-Webster feel proud and this is in fact my preferred style of blogging, with lots of details which I consider thrilling and major, but you will probably consider dull (again, whatevs). You can normally find me either in my dorm in Sunderland Hall which I have appropriately labeled International Sunderland Suite (Which you might know if you follow me on my extremely well used Foursquare account) or running around campus pretending to be busy but in reality i’m probably pondering what was Pikachus evolution in the first Pokemon version.

I will attempt to portray life at Drury as it is with no make up and from my eyes. I sincerely hope you as a perspective DU student feels comfortable enough to express anything on this space, because that was the reason it was created! Seriously though I have literally nothing to do if you guys don’t comment… I have faith that through my eyes you will not only get a glimpse of the amazing school Drury is but you will feel comfortable in coming here, specially if you are an international student. Feel free to visit my earlier posts (All of them yes!) and learn a few more things about this wonderful place! Oh, I am also a self confessed Twitter addict so PLEASE follow me at @JuansDruryBlog for incredibly interesting details of my colorful life (And yes the Obsessive Twitter Disorder is widely accepted…).

Welcome to Drury if it’s your first time, Welcome back if you’ve been here before and See you soon if you are planning on coming here!

-Juan (Pancho for some…)

International Love: DU’s International Family

May 4, 2012 in Uncategorized

We all know the famous song by RB singer Pitbull, but never has it been better represented than in the 2011-2012 semesters at Drury University. Never have I seen a group of people be so different and at the same time so alike, come from dozens of different places and still call the same place home. This I have seen being part of perhaps the greatest community of International students in the US, the DU 2011-2012 Internationals.

Hello my good readers!

As you can tell by my latest posts Finals Week is fast approaching and with it the warmth of Summer, but most importantly the chance to start fresh in August with new goals and objectives. However it is also the chance to remember what a great year we all had and how thankful we must be for being part of a community as unique at Drury.

It all started back during the hot month of August, coming back to Drury each semester is always a memory I treasure because nothing beats that moment when you see your friends and those close to you after a long time apart; nothing except perhaps welcoming the new Internationals to their home for the next 4 years (5 if you decide to become a crazy Architecture student ;) ). They are all nervous and scared, but at the same time they most excited because they don’t know what awaits them, just that it will be something beyond their most wild dreams. Orientation began and with it my opportunity to meet them all, and boy was I surprised with what we got! Never have I seen a group of people become friends as fast, forget about nationalities! Korea befriended Spain, Ecuador bonded with Iraq, Germany approached South Africa and many other friendships that to this day remain strong and vibrant. It is the purest of moments to watch something as beautiful as this develop and I was and continued to feel privileged to be able to be part of this experience. As classes began I saw as they struggled to adapt to this new environment, which brought them closer, giving each and everyone of them the strength they needed to finally call Springfield a Home away from Home. Us veterans had gone through a similar process, but it was a wonderful experience for me to see all these smart, talented and extraordinary people creating bonds that will last for ever, no matter where we are. Today I can proudly say I am extremely thankful for them considering me their friend and placing their trust in my, even if when the semesters dragged along and we became apart, I know that we shall always remain the friends we are.

From my rather excessive Foursquare check in’s you might have learned of a place called International Summit House, although that is the official name it is a place I also call home. This house has seen its fair share of International’s, it has been host to friendships growing, people falling in love, fighting and eventual reconciliations, but most importantly it has seen the birth of a family. You all might not understand why I dedicate my time to internationals, but that moment when I saw dozens of happy faces finally getting over what they had left behind in their countries and realizing: “Hey! I actually like this bunch of crazy people that speak a different language, believe something different and come from a different place; not only do I like them, but I want to be part of them!” That’s the moment when it all becomes worth it.

The cold weather brought with it October and November when yet again I saw the evidence that something magical was happening with the international community at Drury, something that I nor anyone else could have predicted.  Fall Break in Memphis was perhaps one of the best times I have ever had in my life. Hanging out with the best of people in a city we didn’t know, but were so eager to discover was just amazing. Another layer of strong and unbreakable friendship was added to our group and again I thought to myself “hey maybe this international community thing  can actually become a reality!” As we drove back to Springfield I couldn’t help but smile looking around the van and looking at all these people who I called strangers 2 months prior and now I could even call my family.

Thanksgiving Break has always been somewhat of a puzzle for internationals considering we don’t celebrate it per say, but celebrating we did! Although I myself headed to Chicago with some of my friends I know many Internationals went home with their American roommates, others traveled to even further places than Chicago and overall it was a time to relax after Midterms and studying so we could come back refreshed for the rest of the semester. Wherever we went we made new friends or cemented existing ones, making sure our community remained vibrant and ever growing. And again as I rode back on the Amtrak from Chicago to St. Louis and saw all my friends either sleeping or happily chatting I was thrilled to see it actually coming together. Our family

Many things happened afterwards that either made this dream of mine more of a reality, and others made it burst the bubble, but there is one moment when I knew it had actually became a sure thing. Planning for the 2012 International Food Festival is always the most stressful time of the year for me (yeah forget about Finals or Midterms). The weeks before I was somewhat disappointing as I observed people either ignoring their roles in the organization or simply abstaining to participate at all! But I pushed the matter to the back of my mind, I had bigger things to worry about, for starters how were 50 people going to feed over 300 in less than 1 hour?!

I did not think about this again until the very end of the Food Festival. Everyone started to leave since the performances were over and the food was all finished, but when I called every International present to the stage for our group picture… well that was the moment I knew the Dream had become a Reality. Saw dozens of different countries represented, but only one community and its a community so diverse and at the same time so similar that I couldn’t help but doubt it.

You see we have all been through so much together that it would be impossible for us to not be the greatest of friends! And any international reading this will know what I am talking about, it is both the bad moments and the good moments that make us grow closer. It’s like a Roller Coaster ride, but every roller coaster stops safely at some point even though it might have loops or sharp turns. But isn’t this the beauty of life? Not the goal itself, but how you get there?

When I was asked by my office to write a post to wrap up my year I tossed dozens of ideas in my mind, but then I realized! I would be nothing today if it not were for my international family that not only has been there whenever I needed them, but also has proven to me and the world that different languages or religions are not an obstacle in the way of friendship. It has been without a doubt an incredible year and I would not change anything because I myself have grown as a person, because of both the bad moments and the good.

Whether youre reading this from Islamabad or Nairobi, Buenos Aires or Moscow, Sidney or Osaka; know that this will also become your family when you attend our school. We cannot wait for you to join us!

Thanks to everyone who made this year, one of the best in my life!

Juan
