Using Phones During Class: Privilege or Distraction?

An inescapable, unavoidable, infallibly inevitable fact of life is that people like their phones. Particularly individuals that fall under my age demographic. According to statistics from the Pew Research Center , teens and young adults ages 18-29 were by far the most active cell phone users out of the other age groups tested. Of course this is probably no surprise whatsoever to anyone reading.

Now before I continue, I’m NOT going to talk about the evils of texting or about how your phone is going to turn you into a mindless, Walking Dead style zombie.

That being said, it would be VERY likely to assume that most college students (who, for the most part fall well under the age limits of 18-29) would use their cell phones dozens if not hundreds of times during the day. Probably during classes as well. So that brings me to the point of my question: would using cell phones during class be too much of a distraction or a disruption?

I did a little bit of asking around and here are some of the responses to see what some other students thought. I asked senior Alyssa Baker what her opinion was and this is what she told me:

I’m kinda torn about texting in class. I think it is disrespectful to the professor especially if it’s a small class, but at the same time, I feel like each student takes responsibility for their own learning, so you’re only hurting yourself if you pay more attention to your phone than the professor.

Alyssa brings up a pretty good point, even if the professor is relatively lax about their cell phone policy, its still up to the individual student on how they decide to focus their attention. In my own personal opinion, I think if they professor is okay with their students using their phones and you truly believe that you’re capable of balancing your attention, then it should be fine.

I also asked a fellow freshman, Jenny Scoggin about what she thought and this is what she had to say:

My thoughts on texting in class are that it is extremely distracting and gets me thinking about other situations in life totally unrelated to the topic at hand…but hey, sometimes you need distractions! However, I always seem to become distracted at the most inopportune times.

After talking to Alyssa and Jenny, I sort of feel like the irresponsible one. Maybe I should put my phone away a little bit more during class. Well, I guess this is a learning experience for me.
